Nissan’s much-awaited Duster-rival is ready to shake up the mid-size SUV space with a distinct ‘Baby Patrol’ design and premium tech.
Nissan India has finally put the endless speculations to rest. Following the initial previews that sparked a frenzy as the February 2026 debut Nissan Tekton SUV confirmed and teased ahead of its ultimate summer launch, the Japanese automaker has officially locked in July 9, 2026, for the global unveil of the vehicle. The upcoming mid-size SUV marks Nissan’s aggressive comeback strategy in a segment currently dominated by heavyweights like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Although it shares its RGMP platform (Renault Group Modular Platform) with the third-generation Renault Duster, the Tekton is no mere badge-engineering exercise. Based on the teasers and our close observations, Nissan has gone the extra mile to ensure this SUV establishes a commanding and unique road presence.
The ‘Baby Patrol’ Design Language
One of the most striking aspects of the Nissan Tekton is its design vocabulary. Internally dubbed the ‘Baby Patrol’, the SUV draws heavy inspiration from Nissan’s legendary global flagship, the Patrol.
The front fascia is imposing, featuring a wide grille with double chrome strips, flanked by aggressive C-shaped LED DRLs. Unlike the rugged, utilitarian vibe of its French cousin, the Tekton leans towards an urban, premium appeal with body-colored surfacing and a sculpted, raised bonnet line.
Moving to the side, it retains the muscular stance and high ground clearance (expected to be around 212mm) characteristic of the Duster but introduces uniquely designed 18-inch alloy wheels. The rear is equally sophisticated, boasting a full-width connected LED light bar that houses the illuminated Nissan logo right in the center.
Feature-Rich Cabin and Tech
If the exterior is all about dominance, the interior is focused on modern finesse. While official interior images are yet to drop, spy shots suggest a highly differentiated cabin. The dashboard will sport a triple-tone finish with premium copper and gloss black accents, distancing itself completely from the Duster’s traditional grey-and-black theme.
Buyers in this segment are highly feature-conscious, and Nissan seems to be fully aware of this. Expect the Tekton to be loaded with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Google integration, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and dual-zone climate control. Safety will also take center stage, with a 360-degree surround-view camera and a Level 2 ADAS suite likely on offer.
Under the Hood: Turbocharged Performance
Powertrain options are expected to mirror the Renault Duster. The Nissan Tekton will likely be offered with two capable petrol engines:
- A 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 100 bhp and 160 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
- A more potent 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine churning out approximately 163 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. This unit will cater to driving enthusiasts, offered with both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission).
There are also strong rumors of a strong hybrid powertrain joining the lineup at a later stage, which would give it a solid edge against hybrid rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
Our Take: What This Means for the Segment
In my opinion, the Nissan Tekton is exactly the kind of product the brand needs to reignite its momentum in India. While the Magnite has been a fantastic volume driver for them, the brand desperately needed a strong contender in the highly lucrative mid-size SUV space. By ensuring the Tekton looks distinctly different from the Duster—channeling the premium, mature aura of the global Patrol—Nissan is playing a very smart card.
The mid-size SUV segment is an incredibly tough nut to crack, but if Nissan gets the pricing right (expected to be anywhere between Rs 11 lakh to Rs 19 lakh, ex-showroom), the Tekton has all the right ingredients to become a serious threat to the established Korean and Indian rivals.
