Yamaha has pulled the wraps off a rather unique and captivating custom version of its popular neo-retro roadster, the XSR155, in Japan. Built in collaboration with the renowned Japanese lifestyle brand Beams, this special iteration swaps out the usual sleek urban commuter vibe for a hardcore, outdoorsy persona. Cloaked in a striking matte Olive-green paint scheme, this custom build isn’t just about looking pretty parked outside a cafe—it genuinely looks ready to tackle a weekend camping getaway.
The Visual Treatment
The first thing that grabs your attention is, of course, that gorgeous green paint job. Yamaha and Beams have applied a smooth, non-glossy matte olive-green finish across the front mudguard, the iconic teardrop fuel tank, and the minimalist side panels. Personally, I feel this shade brings out the retro character of the XSR lineage far better than any standard metallic paint ever could. To break the monotony, there’s a beautifully clean, classic ‘Yamaha’ graphic in white across the tank.

But look closer and you’ll notice the finer details. The side panels proudly wear a ‘Happy Outside Beams’ logo finished in gold, which perfectly complements the overall earthy tone. The seat is wrapped in a rugged texture that blends seamlessly with the bike’s utilitarian styling. If you ask me, this color scheme feels exceptionally premium and distinctive, striking the exact balance between stealthy and adventurous.
Serious Overlanding Gear
What transforms this from a mere cosmetic exercise into a proper lifestyle statement is the extensive array of functional accessories. Up front, the round LED headlight gets a rugged black headlight grille, and the handlebar is equipped with beefy ZETA knuckle guards to shield your hands from stray branches or cold wind.
But the real magic happens at the back. Beams has fully kitted out the XSR155 with heavy-duty soft panniers and a rugged top box. To top it off, the setup integrates a dedicated Helinox storage unit specifically designed to carry camping equipment and outdoor essentials. While some might argue that strapping bulky luggage onto a small-capacity roadster ruins its clean lines, I think it gives the XSR an incredibly purposeful, overlander stance that is hard to ignore.
Under the Skin
As is usually the case with official custom builds, things remain completely unchanged under the skin. The XSR155 continues to rely on its tried-and-tested 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology—the exact same potent motor that handles duties on the R15 V4 and MT-15.
For the Japanese market, this unit is tuned to pump out 18.7bhp and 14Nm of peak torque, which gives it a marginal 0.6bhp advantage over the version we get here in India. Paired with a slick 6-speed gearbox and an assist and slipper clutch, the power delivery is bound to feel punchy in the mid-range and frantic at the top end. The robust Deltabox frame and upside-down front forks are retained, ensuring that the sharp, confidence-inspiring handling traits remain completely intact.
The Indian Context
Now, while this custom project is currently exclusive to Japan to celebrate the bike’s local launch there, it makes us wish Yamaha India would take some inspiration. We recently received the clean ‘Metallic Black’ shade with gold USD forks in the Indian market, which is undeniably a handsome look.
However, there is no discounting the fact that a rugged, accessory-loaded scrambler variant like this Olive-green version would find massive traction among Indian buyers who love touring on small-capacity, premium machines. Whether Yamaha decides to offer these bits as official accessories locally remains to be seen, but for now, we can only admire this custom beauty from afar.
